The Creative Christmas Tree Contest

The Elyria Arts Council holds this fun contest every year to allow creative participation for all and to raise money for our Kids’ Art Drop-In program. The idea behind the contest is that you must create your own tree, you cannot simply decorate and existing live or fake tree. We are always looking for creative people to submit inventive entries! The trees are displayed at the Elyria Arts Council for the month of December and voted on by the community and the board of EAC. Voting takes place by depositing money (donation to the Kids’ Art Drop-in program) in the jars for your favorite trees. An open house for the contest is held the first weekend of December and is a fun and very well attended event!

The Categories

  1. Large tree: Your tree can be up to 8 feet high. Entries are limited to 8 trees in this category. Get your entry form in early if you wish to enter this category! First come, first serve!
  2. Small tree: Your tree can be 4 feet high or less.
  3. A collection of miniature trees: trees must be 2 feet or less. We are not putting a limit on the number of trees this year, but we are asking that your entry not exceed 20 x 30 inches of table space.

The Rules

  1. You cannot use a real or artificial tree as your “Base” and decorate it. Doing so will disqualify your entry from winning an award.
  2. Use any non-perishable item to create a Christmas tree shape and decorate it in any fashion you choose. Some examples of acceptable materials are wire, plastic, cardboard, wood, clay, yarn, paint, pencils, and fabric. Your tree does not have to have a theme. You are welcome to use any props such as lights, ornaments, animal figures, fake snow etc.…to add details to your entry. Please do not use live pine branches to decorate your entry!
  3. Collections of trees can be constructed and attached to a base.
  4. Entries will not be accepted if they do not meet the above requirements. Please call us with any questions!

The Prizes

Award ribbons will be given in each category for 1st 2nd and 3rd place. Ribbons will also be given for ”People’s Choice”, “Most Creative use of materials”, “Most Unique materials” and “Best Student entry”.

Voting

Anyone can vote as many times as they wish. Entries will be numbered, and jars will be set-up for each entry by our sales desk. Voters choose their favorite by putting money into the jars. The jars that earn the most money are our winners. We encourage friends and family of tree creators to come and vote for for entries and help raise funds for Kid’s Art Drop-in.

The fees for participating in this contest are: Adults or groups $10.00. Students: $5.00.
